Spotlight Video: Lincoln Home National Historic Site

I first visited the Lincoln Home National Historic Site in Springfield, Illinois in March 1979, when I was two months shy of three years old. It is one of my oldest memories, so I felt it was fitting to have this be my first video.

I start by giving a background & overview of the Illinois that Abraham Lincoln knew. This includes discussion on how Illinois legislatures fought to support slavery, even though they were considered a "free state". As someone who spent 8 years of school in Illinois, even I was surprised and what I discovered when I researched the topic. I then discuss Abraham & Mary Lincoln's backgrounds, how they met, and talk about their life during their time in the home, up until Abraham was elected President in 1860.

I also share what happened to the house when the family went to Washington DC in 1861, and it's history after the assassination. I then go through my favorite things about the house, and wrap-up with some helpful suggestions for your time there, including how to access it online if you're unable to make the journey.

I put many months of time into this first video; this was definitely a labor of love. I hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoyed researching & putting it all together!
